The Jebel Jais team has put together some valuable tips to ensure that you and your family remain safe and in good health.

Getting to the mountains

Before you leave home, think like Bear Grylls. Bear uses the memory aid "Please Remember What's First"; he would never embark on an exciting adventure without having a plan in place.

Weather Conditions

When visiting the Jebel Jais mountain peak, towering at 1,934 metres above sea level, make sure to check the weather forecast. The weather will likely be consistent, calm and pleasant; however, it's well-known that the weather in mountainous terrain can change quickly and without warning.

Weather Conditions

Stay hydrated

It's vital to remain adequately hydrated. Although the Jebel Jais mountains are up to 10 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than the rest of the UAE, it is still essential that you drink lots of water, particularly if you are taking part in strenuous activities such as hiking. Always take more water than you think that you will need. As a precaution, take some rehydration salts to drink when you return to replace essential minerals.

Stay hydrated

Appropriate clothing

Weather conditions can change quickly. It is advisable to wear multiple thin layers so that it is easy to maintain your optimal body temperature if the temperature rises or falls.

Wear appropriate footwear. Wear trainers or walking boots with a sturdy, thick sole with good traction to help prevent you from slipping. Do not wear open-toed sandals, flip-flops or heels in the mountains.

Hiking

If you are going for a hike, download the free self-guided hiking trails. Remember that you might not get internet coverage in the mountains, so do not rely on in-phone navigation. It’s vitally important never to leave the mapped routes so that you don’t get lost. Here are some tips to ensure that you stay safe:

  • Plan your hike, use your common sense and be aware of your and fellow hikers limitations
  • Research the downloaded trail and make notes. Do not rely on GPS; the signal may be poor in the mountains. Ensure that your smartphone is charged before you set off
  • Know the regulations of the trail and make a note of the opening and closing times of the route. Do not attempt the trail if it is closed
  • Understand how long the route should take you (as an average hiker) and the various potential challenges
  • Water is not available on the trail, so take your own
  • If you drive to the start point of a trail by car, leave a note inside the windscreen stating details such as the route taken, size and name of group, contact number of hike leader and time you expect to return
  • Save the emergency numbers in a number of phones
  • Try and hike at times when there are likely to be other people around, such as early morning or late afternoon
  • Always keep track of time and if necessary, turn back with ample time to finish your hike before dark
  • Never hike alone

Always tell a member of your family or a friend where you are going. Most importantly, never go alone. It's much more fun if you have a hiking companion and if in the event of an accident, they can raise the alarm.

In the case of any emergency, call 999 for Police and  998 for Ambulance.
